A vineyard at the mountain edge

Ochram is a small vineyard and wine producer in Bannau Brycheiniog, on the slopes of the Blorenge in Monmouthshire.

We are establishing our vineyard on a steep south-facing hillside of pasture, hedgerows and open sky, growing varieties selected for the Welsh climate and working with the landscape rather than trying to remake it.

Our own vines are still establishing. In the meantime, our first wines are made from fruit grown at Pen-y-Clawdd, an established Monmouthshire vineyard that we manage nearby.

This is where Ochram begins.

Our Wines

Our first wines are made in small quantities from fruit grown in Monmouthshire. Different in character, but connected by freshness, cool-climate acidity and an intention to let the fruit speak clearly.

Working the steep Ochram slope, the valley falling away beyond

Y Winllan

Below the Blorenge

The Ochram vineyard sits on the lower slopes of the Blorenge, inside Bannau Brycheiniog — where the cultivated landscape begins to give way to the mountains.

The site is steep, south-facing and exposed to the changing Welsh weather. Hedgerows divide the fields, the ground falls towards the valley and the mountain is almost always somewhere in view.

We are planting the vineyard here because of the place, not despite it.

Ochram

Ochram started with a piece of marginal hillside and the question of whether it could become something more.

The ground has been cleared and improved, hedgerows replanted and the vineyard laid out across the slope.

Rather than forcing familiar grape varieties into an unfamiliar climate, we are planting varieties chosen to suit the site and growing them with as little intervention as practical.

While those vines establish, Pen-y-Clawdd gives us the opportunity to make wine now — to work with established vines, learn from each vintage and begin defining what Ochram wine should be.

This is a vineyard being built slowly.
